Welcome Transfer Students

Congratulations on your recent acceptance as a UC Irvine Law transfer student. Starting out, it may feel as if you’re being lumped into the same category as 1Ls, but you’re not. We see you and recognize your transition into the Class of 2027. Despite this feeling that sometimes accompanies the transfer class, we are confident you will find your way. And if you need help, we are with you at every point in your journey. While a lot of the information on our admitted student website is pertinent to both first year and transfer students, this page is solely for you. If you have any questions or would like to connect with a current UC Irvine Law student, please email us at admissions@law.uci.edu

Submit Statement of Intent to Register (SIR)

To reserve your seat in the UC Irvine Law Class of 2027, you must submit your SIR Deposit by July 15, 2025. The SIR Deposit allows the law school to prepare administratively for your arrival and opens other items, such as the housing application, class registration, clinic placement, etc.

Submit SIR

Transfer Credit Policy

Transfer students will receive up to a maximum of 29 transfer credits towards the UC Irvine School of Law J.D. degree for coursework completed the first year. The specific number of transfer credits, whether the UC Irvine Law requirements have been fulfilled, and UC Irvine Law course equivalencies will be determined by the Assistant Dean for Student Services, Kyle Jones. You may be asked by Dean Jones to submit course descriptions and syllabi of coursework to confirm course content. Transfer students must complete all UC Irvine Law first-year course requirements that they have not completed at their prior law school (and for which they did not take an equivalent course) within their first year as a transfer student.

Registration Information

Once you submit your Statement to Intent to Register (SIR), you will receive detailed instructions on registration and other enrollment information. In the meantime, you can review the registration page on the UC Irvine Law Registrar’s website.

Prior to registering, you must do the following:

  • Submit your SIR Deposit by the due date as outlined in your admission email.
  • Review UC Irvine Law graduation requirements.
  • Review the Law School Course Catalogue and select courses you would potentially like to register for.
  • Enrollment in upper-level courses is completed through LawReg (UCInetID required). We encourage you to watch the LawReg video tutorial for assistance.

If you have any questions regarding registration, please contact the Office of Student Services.

Orientation

Check-in for Orientation will take place on Tuesday, August 12. It is a mandatory program designed to introduce you to your classmates, faculty, and other members of our law school family. It is also the beginning of your legal education at UC Irvine, with a substantive program that will form the basis for a terrific experience here. You will receive more detailed information later this summer when specific dates and times for transfer programming have been set.*

Enrollment Checklist

To help make your transition into UC Irvine Law as seamless as possible, we have created a list of important tasks to be completed prior to your arrival. The enrollment checklist is created for all incoming JD students – both first year and transfer.

Tuition & Fees

Incoming transfer students should familiarize themselves with tuition costs, deadlines, and payment options. The Student Financial Services team is dedicated to working with you to identify sources of financial support and develop realistic budgets to meet your goals. In addition to managing the delivery of all types of financial aid funds, the office offers law students loan counseling, advice on maintaining financial aid eligibility, debt management workshops, web-based tools to manage an education loan portfolio, and Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP).  We encourage you to schedule an appointment with the Director of Student Financial Services, Nasreen Zia, or the Assistant Director of Student Financial Services, Jennifer Terrazas, to discuss options for financing your legal education at UC Irvine Law.

Student Life

UC Irvine Law has a small student body that is supportive of one another and a team of faculty, administrators and staff who are dedicated to student development. Our Student Affairs Office promotes the personal and professional success of our students and encourages you to get involved by joining (or starting) a student organization, building a relationship with your mentors, attending a speaker series event, participating in social programming and developing your leadership skills.

Journals

Journals

UC Irvine Law students have an opportunity to hone their written communications skills by participating and working on academic publications focused on legal scholarship.

The UC Irvine Law Review was founded in the spring of 2010, during the law school's inaugural year, to promote exceptional legal scholarship by featuring contributions from a spectrum of academic, practical, and student perspectives. You will receive additional information about how you can join this journal after your SIR has been submitted.

This journal is a student-run publication dedicated to the advancement of legal scholarship in the fields of international, comparative, and transnational law. You will receive additional information about how you can join this journal after your SIR has been submitted.

Clinic Placement

Participation in one of our core clinics is contingent upon completion of the UC Irvine Law first-year curriculum, including Civil Procedure and either prior or concurrent enrollment in Evidence. Clinical Administrator Debi Gloria will contact you to discuss our clinical offerings and which ones have openings.
