Registration

Note: These instructions do not apply to first-year students, who will be enrolled in courses by the Law Registrar.

The most current course descriptions for advanced-level law courses are listed in the Law Course Catalog. The catalog specifies courses currently being offered and historical course offerings.

Two separate steps must be completed in order to be registered officially:

  • Enrollment in upper-level courses is completed by law students through LawReg (UCInetID required)
  • Payment of tuition (UCInetID required)

Enrollment Windows

Upper-level law students can enroll in courses and make changes to their course schedule during their assigned enrollment window. General enrollment windows are available on the School of Law Academic Calendar. The Law Registrar will notify students when their individual enrollment windows can be verified in LawReg.

Some academic holds prevent enrollment in courses and may prevent enrollment windows from being generated. Students should monitor their student record for holds and contact the department that placed the hold to discuss the conditions of its removal. The Law Registrar does not place holds and can only generate the enrollment window after these holds have been removed by the department that placed it.

Full-Time Enrollment

The ABA requires that full-time students enroll in a minimum of 12 units per grading period. Law students must obtain approval through an Academic Petition to enroll in fewer than 12 or more than 16 units in any semester. Enrollment in fewer than 12 units may affect Financial Aid.

Students must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units to activate financial aid for the upcoming term.

Enrollment Process

Course offerings can be accessed in the Law Course Catalog. Make sure to select the upcoming semester and review course descriptions for prerequisites, enrollment restrictions, and time conflicts. You will use the five-digit course code (84xxx) listed in the catalog to add a course in LawReg.

Once registration begins, current enrollment, waitlist numbers, and number of available seats in each course will be available through the Schedule of Classes Application by selecting the upcoming semester as the term and “LAW” as the department.

Please note: Law students can only register through the LawReg system and will receive the error “not eligible to enroll in courses this quarter” when accessing the central campus “WebReg” system.

Authorization Codes

Some courses (independent study, externships, clinics, etc.) require authorization codes for enrollment. Courses requiring authorization codes are noted in the Law Course Catalog.

Directed Research authorization codes are provided to students after the course has been approved through a “Request for Directed Research” petition in the Academic Petition Application portal.

Authorization codes can only be used for the course they were issued.

Non-Law Graduate Courses

Students interested in enrolling in non-law graduate courses on campus must submit a “Credit for Non-Law Course on UC Campus” petition in the Academic Petitions Application. If approved, students will be enrolled by the Law Registrar.

Add/Drop/Change Grading Option

Students may add, drop, or change the unit or grading option of a course during the first two weeks of instruction in LawReg. Note that the course faculty may set an earlier deadline to drop a course. The earlier deadline will be published in both the Law Course Catalog and in the course syllabus. If an earlier deadline is set, it is a violation of the Law School Honor Code to drop a course after that deadline without written permission from the instructor and the Assistant Dean for Student Services.

Students must submit an Academic Petition to add, drop, or change the unit or grading option of a course between the third and sixth week of the semester. After the sixth week, students can no longer add, drop or change a course offered that term. Processing fees will be assessed to the student’s ZOT Bill for course changes made between the third and sixth week of the semester. To avoid paying late fees, law students must have their enrollment schedule settled by Friday of the second week of classes.

Law students cannot register for a term after the start of the last week of instruction.

Grading Option and Variable Units

Law courses can be set to one of three grading options: Grade-Only (G), Credit-Only (S) and Self-Select (Grade or Credit). Law courses are self-select grading option unless otherwise noted in the Law Course Catalog. Law students may take up to 8 self-selected Credit/No-Credit units of upper-level Law School courses. Additional information regarding this policy can be found in the Academic Rules.

If a grading option is not selected when adding a self-select course, the “Grade” option will be added by default.

Most law courses are offered for a specific number of units.  If a course has variable units, the course description will include the requirements for the variable unit options. If a course has variable units, a unit value must be entered when adding the course in LawReg.

Waitlist

If a course is full, and a student meets the enrollment requirements, a waitlist will become available. Waitlisted units are not included when calculating the 12-unit minimum for full-time status. However, they are counted towards the 16-unit maximum enrollment limit. This means you cannot use waitlisted courses to reach full-time status, but they will count against your maximum allowed units.

Waitlist courses are subject to the enrollment restrictions listed in the catalog description and cannot have overlapping instruction times with the student’s existing enrollments or other waitlisted courses. Students will be enrolled into courses automatically in the order they were added onto the waitlist as seats become available.

Notification of enrollment from a waitlist will be sent to the student by email.

Payment of Tuition

It is against Academic Senate policy (SR 542 and IR 340) for students to attend classes before paying tuition and enrolling in classes.

An exception is made during the registration period, when students may enroll in classes before paying fees. However, tuition must be paid on time in order to avoid being assessed late charges.

Loss of Student Status

The final deadline for paying tuition late and/or enrolling late is the last day of instruction. Failing to pay tuition and enroll by this final deadline will result in the loss of student status.

** IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO MONITOR STUDYLIST ENROLLMENT.**
