UC Irvine allows a student to submit a preferred name that will appear in place of the student's legal name in certain University-related records. Electing to use a preferred name will not change your legal name. Preferred names appear in the campus directory, class rosters, and on the UC Irvine Photo ID Card. Your preferred name will be used on transcripts, diplomas, and your legal name will continue to be used on financial aid and scholarship documents and any legal document produced by the University. For a full list of where preferred vs. legal names are used and additional information about preferred names, please visit: https://www.reg.uci.edu/request/preferredname.html.

If you have a current UCInetID, you may set your preferred name via StudentAccess after August 1st. Requests for a preferred name may be submitted only by the student. Students who do not want their preferred name on their diplomas will need to remove their preferred name in StudentAccess prior to commencement.

Deadline: If you want to submit a preferred name, we suggest you do so before uploading your photo for your ID card.

Contact: If you have any questions, please email registrar@law.uci.edu

Update your contact information, such as your address and/or phone number, via StudentAccess after August 1st, using your UCInetID. Additional information can be found on the University Registrar Student Contact Information page.

International Students

In addition to the tasks above, international students should familiarize themselves with these next steps.

The UC Irvine International Centerprovide expert immigration services, including SEVIS compliance, visa documentation and related advising.

Students who are not U.S. Citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents or have a visa status that allows them to study in the U.S., must request a visa document from the UC Irvine International Center before they begin your studies.

The SEVIS fee is paid by F-1 students to cover the cost for the operation of SEVIS. This is a government fee that is paid directly to the U.S. government through the Student and Exchange Visitor Program [SEVP]. The fee is not a UC Irvine fee.

Once you have paid your SEVIS fee, you can contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate to schedule an appointment for an F1 or J1 student visa. USA.gov is a good source for finding a U.S. Embassy or Consulate. The consular officer will determine whether you qualify for the visa. If the visa is issued, you may need to pay an additional visa issuance reciprocity fee.
