Careers in Tax Law

Employers: if you wish to recruit students from the Graduate Tax Program, see "For Employers" below.

Commitment to Students' Professional Success

We understand that one of the prime considerations in selecting a graduate tax program is the support provided to students in achieving their career goals. The Executive Director of the Program, as well as the full-time tax faculty, are committed to assisting and advising our students on career issues. In addition, we actively work with employers in public interest, government, and the private sector to serve as a liaison between employers seeking to meet their tax hiring needs and students looking for jobs in the field.

Throughout the academic year, we conduct panel discussions, brownbag lunches, and workshops covering a broad range of topics including job search tips and techniques, substantive practice overviews, and self-assessments.

On Campus Tax Interview Program

During the fall semester, the Law School hosts multiple employers for an on-campus interview day. Students in the graduate tax program are invited to participate and interview for current job openings in tax law.

Tax Attorney Recruiting Event (TARE)

The Tax Attorney Recruiting Event (TARE) brings together more than 150 graduate tax students from the LL.M. in Taxation programs at Boston University School of Law, the University of Florida Levin College of Law, Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and the University of California, Irvine School of Law. Students will have the opportunity to interview with accounting firms, law firms and companies throughout the nation. TARE 2024 will be held on Feb. 22, 2024.

Tax Practice Mentorship Program

The Graduate Tax Program coordinates the Tax Practice Mentorship Program, which provides students with a framework of support and guidance from practicing tax attorneys. During the first few weeks of the fall semester, we will match each student in the program with a practicing tax attorney, based on the student’s interests and career goals. The student and the mentor will meet informally throughout the academic year and discuss issues related to tax career-development.

If you are an experienced practicing tax attorney and interested in becoming a mentor, complete the Tax Mentor form.

There are multiple ways for tax employers to tap into our pool of excellent graduate tax students:

  • Participate in our Tax Interview Program. Employers who wish to participate in the Tax Interview Program should contact Executive Director, Natascha Fastabend.
  • Post a Job. We encourage employers to meet their tax-law hiring needs by submitting job postings on UCI Law's online job database. After a one-time registration, employers may directly access and submit job postings for exclusive publication to UCI Law students and graduates. Employer accounts and job postings will be approved by the program’s administration as soon as possible. Employers will be able to start posting tax jobs here.
  • Resume Collection and Review. Employers that are unable to interview on-campus are welcome to collect resumes and contact selected students directly to interview via phone, skype, or at the office. Employers will be able to register for resume collection here.
  • Host a Reception. Employers looking for an additional opportunity to connect with our graduate tax students are invited to host an informal reception or a table on campus or at the employer’s office. If you wish to host a reception, please contact us at gradtax@law.uci.edu.
  • On-Campus Interview Anytime. Employers who are unable to interview on-campus during the fall semester's Tax Interview Program date are welcome to arrange a separate visit to campus. Please contact us at gradtax@law.uci.edu to arrange a visit.
  • TARE. UCI’s Graduate Tax Program annually participates in the Tax Attorney Recruiting Event (TARE) which brings together more than 150 graduate tax students from the LL.M. in Taxation programs at Boston University School of Law, the University of Florida Levin College of Law, Northwestern Pritzker School of Law, and UCI Law.
