Recent Highlights
- In spring 2019, UCI Law students enrolled in “The AI Frontier: Disrupting Legal Services” successfully created and introduced a new California State Senate Select Committee on the Growing Impact of Artificial Intelligence. The focus of the select committee is to critically examine the state of AI in California and make recommendations for legislation to support the increased use of AI. In November, members of the committee held a hearing on the impact of artificial intelligence in law enforcement at the Anaheim City Hall Council Chambers. UCI Law students enrolled in “Pushing the AI Frontier: It’s Impact on Law, Policy and the Legal Profession,” a continuation of the spring 2019 course, helped plan the hearing. Read more >
- In August 2019, UCI Law held an invite-only leadership conference on the future of artificial intelligence in the public and private sector of the legal profession, policy and regulation.
- In October 2019, UCI Law hosted the Artificial Intelligence and Access to Justice Forum. The forum included a panel discussion focused on the California State Bar's Task Force on Access Through Innovation of Legal Services recently proposed tentative recommendations to bridge the access to justice gap. - UCI Law students in the course, “Pushing the AI Frontier: Its Impact on Law, Policy and the Legal Profession” have partnered with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing to develop the California New-Parent Leave Rights App. The app aims to demystify the confusing array of legal rights and obligations that new parents have in CA regarding job-protected leave from work. This project began in January 2020.
- In January 2021, Prof. Burk and Prof. Lerner joined the affiliated faculty of the new UCI Steckler Center for Responsible, Ethical and Accessible Technologies, based in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. Read more about the center >
