UCI Law to Host Artificial Intelligence and Access to Justice Forum

Irvine, Calif. (Oct. 8, 2019) – The University of California, Irvine School of Law (UCI Law) will host a panel discussion called, “Artificial Intelligence and Access to Justice Forum.” UCI Law faculty will be leading the conversation on critically important issues surrounding AI.

WHAT: The panel discussion will focus on The California State Bar’s Task Force on Access Through Innovation of Legal Services recently proposed tentative recommendations to bridge the access to justice gap. These proposals include allowing 1) non-lawyers to practice law, 2) non-lawyer ownership in law firms, 3) fee splitting with non-lawyers, and 4) technology based legal service providers to be exempt from the definition of the unlawful practice of law. A question and answer session will follow the panel discussion.

WHO: The discussion will be moderated by Ann Southworth, Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Center for Empirical Research on the Legal Profession at UCI Law. Speakers participating in the panel include: Mehrsa Baradaran, Professor of Law, UCI Law; Victor Fleischer, Professor of Law, UCI Law; Jennifer Lee Koh, Visiting Professor of Law, UCI Law; Emily Taylor Poppe, Assistant Professor of Law, UCI Law; and Neil Sahota, Lecturer and Executive Director and Chief Innovation Officer, Emerging Technologies Research and Policy Institute, UCI Law.
