Mark Bachman

Mark Bachman currently serves as the Chief Technical Officer of an IoT startup, Integra Devices, LLC, as well as Chief IoT Evangelist and Technologist for the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2), In addition, Dr. Bachman is also a university lecturer, professional speaker, and consultant on advanced technology topics. His expertise is in sensor network systems, micro-medical devices, data analytics and visualizations for technology applications. He has been working in this area for 20 years as researcher, faculty, and entrepreneur. Dr. Bachman has published over 85 peer reviewed articles, has 12 patents issued, has launched four successful startups, has testified before Congress on IoT, and has given scores of invited and keynote presentations around the world. Dr. Bachman earned a BS in Physics and a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics from the University of Texas, Austin.

Sung-Jin Kim

Founder & CTO
Hiperwall, Inc.

Sung-Jin Kim has researched distributed computing and distributed visualization for 14 years. As part of his PhD work at UC Irvine, he developed early versions of software for HIPerWall, a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded project, which created the technology for the world's highest resolution tiled display. Upon completing his PhD, he joined the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2) at the UCI as a post-doctoral researcher, where he continued his research on distributed visualization and improved the software for HIPerWall. He co-founded Hiperwall, Inc. to commercialize the tiled display technology into a cost-effective software solution that uses commodity computing and display components. As Hiperwall's Chief Technology Officer, he provides the overall vision, strategy and leadership for development of the company’s innovative products and solutions. He earned a BS in Mathematics from Korea University, an MS in Computer Science from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Computer Engineering from UC Irvine.

SungWoo Nam

Assistant Professor, Mechanical Science and Engineering

Dr. SungWoo Nam is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MechSE) at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He received a BS degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Seoul National University, South Korea, where he graduated summa cum laude with the Valedictorian Prize. Following 3 years of industry experience in carbon nanotube (CNT) manufacturing at ILJIN Nanotech Co., Ltd., he obtained his MA in Physics (2007) and PhD in Applied Physics (2011) from Harvard University. Following the completion of his PhD, Dr. Nam worked as a postdoctoral scholar at the Department of Bioengineering at University of California, Berkeley. He joined MechSE at UIUC in August, 2012.

Dr. Nam’s current research program pursues innovations in controlled deformation (i.e., ‘architecturing’) of atomically-thin, two-dimensional (2D) materials to explore how unique shapes of atomically-thin materials enable new functionalities. His papers have been published in Nature, Nature Materials, Nano Letters, Advanced Materials, etc. and have been cited more than 2000 times. His research is supported by National Science Foundation (NSF), Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Office of Naval Research (ONR), Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Department of Energy (DOE), Intel Corporation, Samsung Electronics, and Hanwha Advanced Materials, among others.

Hye-Won Shin

As a biomedical engineer with a chemical engineering background and clinical translational science experience, Dr. Hye-Won Shin serves as the Chief Science Officer at Chiron Total, a medical program marketing and research organization located in Irvine, CA.

In parallel, Dr. Shin is the Director of Korea Relations at the UC Irvine Office of Global Engagement. Her role is to facilitate collaborative relationships with educational, governmental, and private industrial entities in Korea to promote UCI’s vision of becoming a global leader in education and innovation. In addition, Dr. Shin initiated UCI’s Korean Alumni Chapter in South Korea, the very first international alumni chapter at UCI, and is a founding board member of UCI’s Korean-American Alumni Chapter.

Dr. Shin holds a PhD in Chemical and Biochemical Engineering from UCI and earned her Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). She has extensive experience in developing minimally invasive medical technologies utilizing gas biomarkers to detect and follow malignancy, infection, and inflammation. She is an inventor on three issued and two pending patents. Dr. Shin was previously an independent investigator with an academic title of project scientist at UCI where she worked closely with engineers, chemists, and respiratory physiologist to translate engineering technology into the medical marketplace.

Youn Sim

Head, Strategic Planning and Sustainability Office
Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Works

Youn Sim is a 20-year veteran at the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works and is currently the Head of Strategic Planning and Sustainability Office of the Department. As the Department’s Sustainability and Innovation Officer, he leads the Department’s sustainability initiatives through strategic planning, policy development and implementation, and long-range planning of sustainable infrastructure management. He has been invited to give numerous speeches at universities, and national conferences and workshops. He is the former chair of the Sustainability Committee of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and is a member of ASCE Committee on Sustainability and Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. He has been actively serving the Korean American community as the former Southern California chapter president of Korean American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA). Prior to joining the County, Mr. Sim had 10 years of research and consulting experience in water resources protection. He received his PhD from UC Irvine, in Civil Engineering.
