  Joon Bang

  Executive Director
  Korean American Coalition

  Joon Y. Bang is the executive director of the Korean American Coalition-Los Angeles (KAC-LA), a 2017 California Non-Profit of the Year Honoree. After graduating from Biola University, Mr. Bang interned with the National Conference of State Legislatures in Washington D.C., contributed to several published reports on immigration, and spearheaded publication on the Human Services federal budget update in 2006. His career in social justice work began with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund (LDF) where he served as the primary program manager in the national office. He led multiple programs including the historic Civil Rights Training Institute and oversaw the organization’s strategic planning and special projects.

  After LDF, Mr. Bang joined the UCLA Foundation as its associate director to help advance the philanthropic pillar of the organization by partnering with the organization’s board of directors and was responsible for creating the Foundation’s $500,000 scholarship fund to support low-income students. Mr. Bang currently serves on the steering committee of the United States Census Bureau CIC and advisory board of Divided Families USA.

  Lisa Kim

  Deputy Attorney General
  Privacy Enforcement & Protection Unit, California Dept. of Justice

  Lisa Kim is a deputy attorney general in the Privacy Enforcement and Protection Unit of the Consumer Law Section at the California Department of Justice. She enforces state and federal privacy laws, educates Californians on their rights and strategies for protecting their privacy, encourages businesses to follow privacy-respectful best practices, and advises the Attorney General on privacy matters. Prior to joining the Attorney General’s office, she was a litigator at Reed Smith LLP in the areas of complex business litigation, data privacy, class action defense, legal malpractice, and products liability. Ms. Kim earned her BA magna cum laude from UCLA and her JD from University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

  Sylvia Kim

  Orange County Regional Director
  Asian Americans Advancing Justice

  Sylvia Kim is Asian Americans Advancing Justice-LA's Orange County Regional Director. Ms. Kim provides vision and strategic leadership for the organization’s work and is responsible for securing resources to sustain and expand the Orange County Regional office.

  Prior to joining Advancing Justice, Ms. Kim was the executive director of a multi-ethnic collaborative advocating to reduce racial disparities in accessing mental health. She currently sits on the Steering Committee for the California-wide Racial and Ethnic Mental Health Disparities Coalition and is a member of the California Office of Health Equity Advisory Committee. Originally from Toronto, Canada, she co-founded Canada's largest human rights organization for North Korean human rights.

  Ms. Kim earned her JD from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto and completed her Master of Studies in International Human Rights Law (LL.M. equivalent) at Oxford University. After law school, she practiced criminal law as both a defense attorney and as an Assistant Crown Attorney. Ms. Kim then went on to non-profit community-based work managing public legal education programs and training sessions on access to justice issues. Ms. Kim moved to Orange County, California in late 2013 and is a regular contributor to the Huffington Post.

  Young Kim

  Former California State Assemblywoman

  Young Kim’s public service began more than 25 years ago, when she began to work for U.S. Representative Ed Royce, serving as his key liaison in the communities and eventually becoming his Director of Asian Affairs. In addition, Kim earned a reputation for being a popular television Talk Show Host with her weekly program on KSCI-LA 18, LA Seoul (1997-2005), and on Arirang-TV’s Real Talk (2011).  Currently, she is hosting a weekly program called “KBS America Talk Show: Issues and Empathy.”

  Continuing to expand her public service, Kim was elected to the 65th California State Assembly District in 2014. Despite long odds, she unseated a fully funded incumbent to become the first ever Korean-American woman elected to serve in the State Assembly. As Assemblywoman, Kim promoted popular policy objectives in our state government such as fiscal restraint of tax spending, education reform, and spurring economic opportunities. Additionally, Kim was successful in securing millions of dollars to help homeless youth and veterans, introduced legislation to build a veterans hospital in Orange County, and championed a measure to protect victims of domestic violence with her bill (AB 2078) that passed with bipartisan support.

  Kim is currently a candidate for Orange County Board of Supervisors, 4th District, which represents North Orange County cities of Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Habra and Placentia.
