Message from Dean L. Song Richardson on the 2020 Election

11-03-20

Dear UCI Law Community,

This has truly been an unprecedented time for all of us. And now, we are living through an historic election.

Over the past several months, I’ve had conversations with many of you about Election Day and about the anxiety many of us are feeling at this moment about the future of our democracy. No matter the outcome, I know that we will come together as a community and live our values. As a law school, we are training our students to be future leaders and we are engaging in research that addresses the most pressing issues of our time. In times like this, we must do all that we can to respect each other’s right to exchange ideas and share our views across the political spectrum.

We are a school that values diversity, equity and inclusion. No matter the outcome of this election, these values will not change. We are a school and a community that does not shy away from tackling tough issues and participating in spirited debate. Our ability to engage in difficult conversations while being respectful of each other must not change. In fact, it becomes even more important in times like these.

I believe in our democracy and our country, however imperfect they may be sometimes. Despite the unprecedented challenges we have faced this year, I take solace in the warmth and passion of our community at UCI Law, where we continuously join together to make the world a better place. As we look forward, let us be reminded of our mission and purpose at UCI Law. We will continue our fight to make the world fairer, more equitable, and more just.

Sincerely,

L. Song Richardson
