Professor David Kaye, UN Special Rapporteur on the freedom of opinion and expression, conducted an official visit to Japan to explore media independence, access to information, and other issues. He traveled with two students from UCI Law’s International Justice Clinic, Zoe McKinney and Ashley Sutton. The team met with senior officials throughout the Government of Japan, lawyers, activists, academics and journalists. After the weeklong visit, Prof. Kaye reported his findings at a press conference (video), expressing serious concerns about government pressure on mainstream media outlets. He will submit a final report on the mission to Japan to the UN Human Rights Council in 2017.
