Evelyn R. Carter

Social Psychologist and Author

Evelyn R. Carter, Ph.D., is a social psychologist and author whose research focuses on how to detect and discuss racial bias. Her work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and published in both peer-reviewed and popular press outlets. While serving as a Research Scientist at BruinX in UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, she examined the Supreme Court’s inconsistent treatment of statistical evidence of racial disparity. That scholarship was published in the Northwestern University Law Review Online and cited in the Stanford Center for Racial Justice’s 2025 analysis of Racial Justice Act data claims.

Her debut book, Was That Racist?, combines research, case studies, and practical guidance for combating racism in an increasingly contentious world. Evelyn’s career is dedicated to translating rigorous social science into accessible findings that non-specialist decision-makers can evaluate and act upon in support of a more just society.
