Assessment Policy

(a) All courses offered in the first third of the JD program shall include at least one summative assessment and at least one formative assessment to measure student achievement of course learning outcomes, improve student learning, and provide meaningful feedback to students. The Law School shall offer formative and summative assessments throughout its curriculum.

(b) A “summative assessment” is an assessment at the culmination of a course that measures the degree of student learning in that course.

(c) A “formative assessment” is defined as a (i) means or method of evaluating student performance relative to one or more of the learning outcomes for a given course (ii) that provides meaningful feedback to students to improve their learning (iii) offered prior to a summative assessment. Academic support is available for all students and faculty members may refer students to academic support at their discretion, including on the basis of performance on a formative assessment.

(d) “Meaningful feedback” may include, but is not limited to, written faculty comments, model answers, group review sessions, or individual review sessions. Meaningful feedback need not include a grade, but faculty may offer formative assessments for a grade at their discretion.

(e) All faculty, when submitting course information for the courses they are teaching in that academic semester, shall submit information about the nature and timing of formative and summative assessments that they will be offering in those courses.
