02-21-2020

IRVINE, Calif. (Feb 21, 2020) — Please join UCI Law Chancellor's Professor of Law Michele Bratcher Goodwin for an engaging conversation on Protecting Civil Rights and Civil Liberties in Times of Political Crisis. Hear from Anthony Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU; Dahlia Lithwick, Senior Editor at Slate; Kathy Spillar, Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine; and Lizz Winstead Chief Creative Officer at Abortion Access Front, co-creator of The Daily Show.

WHAT: An evening of thoughtful engagement about pressing issues of our time from the Supreme Court and cases this term to the Justice Department, examining immigration, reproductive rights, the Muslim Ban and much more. An opportunity to hear Professor Goodwin speak about her newly released book, “Policing the Womb: Invisible Women and the Criminalization of Motherhood,” which expands the reproductive health and rights debate beyond abortion to include how legislators increasingly turn to criminalizing women for miscarriages, stillbirths, and threatening the health of their pregnancies. Professor Goodwin brings to light how the unrestrained efforts to punish and police women's reproduction has led to the United States being the deadliest country in the developed world for childbirth.
