Janet Hong

Background:

Named by The Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Women Lawyers in California for 2018, Janet has tried over 40 cases to jury verdict in New York and California, including several homicides.   In 2018, she secured the dismissal of murder charges against a 17-year old client who was in custody and nine months pregnant.

In 1998, Janet graduated from Columbia University magna cum laude with the highest G.P.A. in her major, African-American Studies.  At USC Law School, she participated in the moot court honors program and served as the President of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association.  After law school, Janet worked as a public defender for four years in the Criminal Defense Division of The Legal Aid Society of New York and then seven years at the Alternate Public Defender’s Office of Los Angeles. 

Now a solo practitioner and owner of The Hong Firm, Janet is certified as a Criminal Law Specialist by the California State Board of Legal Specialization and has served as a drafter for the State Bar Criminal Specialist examination.  She has been recognized as a SuperLawyer in criminal defense for 2019.

Janet is a member of a select panel of attorneys appointed by the Central District under the Criminal Justice Act to represent indigent clients in federal court.   She serves on the executive committee of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles, the board of governors of California Women Lawyers, and the executive committee of Criminal Law Section of the California Lawyers Association.

Janet is a former college basketball player, marathoner, and a two-time Ironman Finisher. She is a world traveler, having been to all the continents, most recently to Antarctica.
