Mock Trial

About

UCI Law Mock Trial provides an opportunity for students to develop and showcase their oral advocacy skills. Participants serve as trial-level attorneys in a criminal or civil law hypothetical case after attending training sessions for opening and closing statements, direct and cross examinations, and objections. The purpose of UCI Law Mock Trial is to allow law students to get a taste of trial work. No previous trial experience is required.

Competitions

The 2L/3L Competition provides an opportunity for second-year and third-year UCI Law students to compete against each other and gain additional practice and experience. The Competition takes place during the spring semester.

Trainings

Before the competitions, the Mock Trial Board will provide trainings on effective direct examination, cross examination, and opening and closing statements. In addition, UC Irvine Law faculty members will assist with presentation and individual coaching.

UCI Law Mock Trial Executive Board 2022-2023

  • President: Maria Hutt
  • I am a 3L at UCI Law, originally from Toronto, Canada. I completed a double major undergraduate degree in Peace, Conflict & Justice Studies and Political Science, with a minor in History, at the University of Toronto in 2020. I am passionate about mock trial and oral advocacy and hope to strengthen UCI’s mock trial program during my tenure. Mock trial has historically taken a backseat to the incredible moot program at our school and I hope that we can show students the many advantages of mock trial.
  • Vice President of External Competition: Avery Field
  • Vice President of Internal Competition: Leilah Rodriguez
  • Administrative Director: Qinzhe (Victoria) Jin
  • Administrative Director: MacKayla Class
  • After growing up in Southern California, I stayed close to my beach-town roots by studying biology at UCSB. I then took a few years off of school and worked in healthcare along the West Coast. Being out in the world showed me the importance of our legal system and inspired me to attend UCI Law. Given my background, I am focused on Environmental Law and hope to use my law degree as a litigator. My interest in litigation was strengthened by my participation as a witness in the ’21-’22 mock trial competition. I am excited to be contributing to mock trial again this year because it is an unparalleled trial court platform for students to cultivate their practical skills. Beyond the casebooks, you can find me enjoying the sunshine with my border collie, Wes.
  • Judicial Relations Director: Alex Mayeda
  • My name is Alex, and I am from Walnut, California. I attended UCSB where I received a B.A. in Political Science. After a summer internship with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, I realized that I loved criminal law and wanted to pursue a career as a prosecutor. Participating in Mock Trial has improved my knowledge of trial advocacy, and allowed me to meet like minded peers. During my free time I enjoy rock climbing, watching action movies, and walking my dog.
  • Judicial Relations Director: Xiaohan (Anastasia) Sun
  • Outreach Director: Clara Bourget
  • Hi all! My name is Clara Bourget and I am a 2L at UCI Law.  I am originally from Montreal and spent six years at the University of Toronto for undergraduate and graduate school. I obtained an Honors Bachelor of Science, specializing in Neuroscience, and a Master of Science in Neurobiology. I decided to go to law school to pursue my interest in Intellectual Property and Patent law, with a focus on litigation.  Mock trial has been on my radar since starting law school since it is focused on an area of practice and skills I intend to pursue and use during my career.  Outside of law school, I love going to the beach, trying new restaurants, and spending time with friends!
