The case argued in the competition was a civil wrongful death lawsuit brought against a toy manufacturer. Local attorneys—including UCI Law alumni—from private firms, government and public interest offices served as jurors/scorers of the competition. Balloting in the final round was incredibly close, with just a few points separating first and second place. All four final contestants demonstrated consummate professionalism and strong command of the Rules of Evidence and trial procedure.

Student members of the Mock Trial Board organized the tournament logistics. Board advisor Justin Bernstein, a business and securities litigator at Stradling, has coached UCI Law Mock Trial since its start. Bernstein is also president of the American Mock Trial Association.
