Ballard Spahr LLP Mock Trial
A mock trial competition allows students, in small teams, to conduct a trial usually in front of a jury. The case might be a civil or a criminal trial.
Students advance in the competition based on a combination of their preliminary Opening Statement and Cross Examination scores. Four teams advance to the Semi-Final rounds, and two teams advance to the Final round. Awards are given to the first- and second-place teams. In addition, individual awards are given for the Best Advocate, Best Opening Statement, and Best Cross Examination.
Who Can Participate?
The competition is open to all second- and third-year UCI Law students. All rounds of the competition will be judged by distinguished members of the bench and bar.
External Mock Trial Competitions
Successful participation in the intra-school competition as a second-year student is a pre-requisite for eligibility to compete in external competitions. External competitions are limited to third-year students. Click here for additional information on UCI Law’s policies on external competitions, and to access an application form.
The Law School’s Mock Trial program is supported by a generous gift from Ballard Spahr LLP. It is a student-run program with a faculty advisor.
After careful reflection, the Law School has decided that there will be no competitions involving first-year law students. The first year of law school has enough pressures without adding competitions and there are ample opportunities for students to participate in Moot Court, Mock Trial and Negotiations/Transactional competitions in their second and third years.
