Announcements
  • New CDO Website: If you have accessed the CDO's internal website you may have noticed that it has been updated. You can log in using your @lawnet credentials; email Jeananne Metskas if you have problems with any links.


  • Spring Interview Program: Employers from all sectors are collecting application materials via Symplicity and will be scheduling interviews throughout the spring for both summer and post-graduate positions. The SIP Employer List, including employers' bidding deadlines and class levels invited to apply, is posted on the CDO website. You can view participating employers and place bids (apply for positions of interest) on Symplicity.


  • Summer and Post-Graduate Placements List: The placements list, including all practice settings in which UCI Law students have spent their summers, is updated and posted on the CDO website. The list also includes the names of students who worked for each employer and are willing to talk about their experience.

CDO Workshops
  • Strategic Career Planning for Post-Graduate Success: February 19 (Friday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, EDU 1111. This interactive program will introduce 1Ls to the essential components of a comprehensive and strategic career action plan. The workshop will focus on activities and developing skills that enhance students’ short-term and long-term employment outcomes and professional success in the private and public sectors. Topics include how to formulate a career plan, identify practice areas of interest, research employers, develop relevant substantive expertise, and engage in strategic and productive professional networking. Students will be encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, and participate in a group conversation regarding these topics. Lunch will be provided.


  • 5th Annual Small Firm & Corporate Counsel Reception: March 7 (Monday), 6:00pm - 7:30pm, MPAA Executive Commons. The reception will give UCI Law students an opportunity to meet and network with attorneys from small to mid-size firms and in-house counsel offices. Dean Chemerinsky will welcome attorneys to the reception with opening remarks. Light refreshments will be served. The preferred RSVP deadline is Tuesday, March 1. Please RSVP on Symplicity.


  • Finding & Applying for Judicial Clerkships: March 11 (Friday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, EDU 1131. Dean Erwin Chemerinsky will moderate a panel of alumni who began their legal careers in clerkships. The panel will discuss why clerkships are valuable and how they impact subsequent career options. The CDO will explain timelines and deadlines, the process for completing applications, and how the CDO can assist with clerkship applications. All students with an interest in judicial clerkships should attend. This event is part of the First-Year Friday series but is open to students in all class years who are considering clerkships. Please RSVP on Symplicity. Lunch will be provided.

  • Public Service Career Planning Workshop: March 16 (Wednesday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, LAW 3750. This workshop is geared toward students interested in pursuing public service careers, in particular 2L and 3L students planning next steps. The presentation will include a discussion of public service careers and explore approaches to public service career planning, including fellowships, strategic summer and school-year positions, and pro bono projects.

  • Hit the Ground Running: Practical Advice for Novice Attorneys: February 20 (Saturday), 9:00am - 1:00pm, Western State College of Law in Fullerton. Law students, graduates, alumni, and attorneys are all invited to attend this unique seminar packed with tips, tricks, and advice for newer lawyers along with "how to" ideas to make you a profitable asset to any firm—even your own.   • SheppardMullin 1L Reception: February 25 (Thursday), 5:30pm - 7:30pm, Eureka! in Irvine. 1Ls are invited to SheppardMullin's 7th Annual 1L Reception. Attire is casual.   • Volunteer Appreciation and Awards Reception: February 25 (Thursday), 5:30pm - 7:30pm, Tom Ham’s Lighthouse in San Diego. The San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program invites you for appetizers and an awards presentation. The Honorable Jeffrey B. Barton, presiding judge of the San Diego Superior Court, will speak and present the awards. RSVP to Devon Blake by Monday, February 22.   • Daniel's Inn 21st Annual Conference: February 27 (Saturday), 8:30am Registration, 9:00am - 1:00pm, Chapman University in Orange. A fellowship of non-denominational Christian lawyers and judges invites you to join in prayer, fellowship, and spiritual growth.   • Judges’ Night Dinner: March 1 (Tuesday), 5:30pm - 6:30pm Cocktail Reception, 6:30pm - 9:15pm Dinner and Program, Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association, the Orange County Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Judge Paul R. Michel Intellectual Property American Inn of Court invite you to the annual Judges’ Night Dinner. Judges’ Night honors members of the judiciary who handle intellectual property matters and features an interactive discussion of current topics with a panel of prominent judges. This year’s keynote speaker will be the Honorable Richard G. Taranto, Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Following Judge Taranto’s keynote address, he will join a panel discussion with Judges James V. Selna and Andrew J. Guilford of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.   • Survival Guide: From Classroom to Courtroom: March 1 (Tuesday), 5:30pm - 8:00pm, CAALA Conference Center in Los Angeles. The Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles is hosting an open dialogue and mentoring session for law students. Attorney members will help students prepare for the transition from classroom to courtroom and will explain what is expected from a law clerk and an associate. Students interested in circulating their resume to CAALA members for current or prospective hiring needs should email Liz Hagan. For more information, see the event website.

  • Southern California Lawyer Entrepreneurs Monthly Meeting: March 5 (Saturday), 11:00am, The Federal Bar in Long Beach. You are invited to join the next monthly meeting of the Southern California Lawyer Entrepreneurs (SCLE), a group for attorneys who have recently (within the last 5 years) started their own solo practices or small firms, and for those considering starting a firm. Participants will share tips on how to succeed in these new ventures.   • Spring Break Criminal Defense Trial Practice Institute: March 13 - 18 (Sunday - Friday), Washington, D.C. The Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia is holding its Third Annual Trial Practice Institute. The Institute seeks to help students cultivate effective trial advocacy skills and explore indigent criminal defense work.   • HaynesBoone 1L Reception: March 15 (Tuesday), 5:30pm - 7:30pm, Costa Mesa Office. Attire is business casual.   • Judicial Clerkship Institute: March 17 - 18 (Thursday - Friday), Pepperdine School of Law in Malibu. Pepperdine University School of Law is hosting the 2-day William Matthew Byrne, Jr. Judicial Clerkship Institute. Any law student or law graduate who has been selected for or has entered a clerkship with a federal magistrate, district, or appellate court judge is eligible to attend. The goal of this institute is to equip law clerks to make significant and valuable contributions to the judges for whom they work and the judiciary as a whole. The registration fee has been reduced to $60 for local law school participants. For more information and to register, click here.

  • The Southwestern Journal of International Law Symposium: March 18 (Friday), 8:00am - 6:15pm, Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles. Southwestern Law School and the Southwestern Journal of International Law are hosting a symposium on The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, 1966-2016: International Context, a study of some of the court’s key international contributions on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the present design of California’s federal courts. The symposium will consider the internationalization of Los Angeles over the past 50 years by focusing on some of the court's international cases and activities. Speakers include 16 sitting and retired federal district court and court of appeals judges, prominent historians and law professors, and a number of the attorneys who argued some of the court's most significant international cases.   • Breaking Into Sports Career Fair & Workshop: March 19 (Saturday), 9:00am - 4:00pm, Gila River Arena in Glendale, AZ. The Arizona Coyotes are hosting this workshop prior to their game against the Tampa Bay Lightning. This exclusive pre-game event will allow you to participate in one-on-one workshops with proven industry executives.   • Prosecutor Academy: May 16 - 18 (Monday - Wednesday), Pepperdine School of Law in Malibu. 1Ls are invited to a 3-day seminar to learn from talented prosecutors how to try a case. Students will handle a real case file, practice all phases of jury trials, and receive informed feedback. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, March 1. For more information, see the event flyer.

  • Equal Justice Works: Rural Summer Legal Corps: Apply now for a $4,000 stipend for more than 30 positions nationwide through EJW's Rural Summer Legal Corps program. The program connects public interest students with LSC-funded civil legal aid organizations to address pressing legal issues facing rural communities. Applications are due Monday, February 29 and are available here.


  • 2016 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award: The Orange County Asian American Bar Association is offering its Outstanding Student Award to recognize local law students who have made significant contributions to OCAABA and the local Orange County legal and general community. The $500 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award will be awarded at OCAABA's Installation and Awards Gala on April 26. Applications are due Monday, February 29 by 5:00pm. Application information and forms can be found here.

  • K&L Gates Kickstarter Program: The program is a multi-week, multi-seminar initiative designed to educate 1Ls who self-identify as diverse or who are current or former U.S. service members about the practice of law at a global law firm. The firm’s lawyers prepare you for the transition from student to summer associate to practicing lawyer by providing specialized educational sessions, resources, and mentoring opportunities. Topics covered include successful interviewing strategies, resume building, how to stand out during a summer job and first years of practice, an overview of law firm economics, and building networking skills that lead to sustained success. The program will be held on four consecutive Tuesdays: March 15, March 22, March 29, and April 5 in the evening. All programs will be held at the K&L Gates Irvine office located at 1 Park Plaza, 12th Floor, Irvine 92614. Unlike other opportunities posted in this section, interested students should apply through Symplicity by Friday, March 4 at 12:00pm.   • WLALA Public Interest Grant Program: The Foundation of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles is accepting applications for its Fran Kandel Public Interest Grant program. The Grant will fund one or two projects to be completed during summer 2016 that benefit residents of the greater Los Angeles area. The maximum amount of the Grant is $5,000. Applications are due Thursday, March 10 by 5:00pm. Additional information and application materials are available on the Grant website and in the Grant Letter.

  • Animal Law Scholarships: Animal Legal Defense Fund is now accepting applications for its Advancement of Animal Law Scholarships. Applications are due Friday, April 1. For more information about the scholarships and how to apply, visit their website.

  • American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Scholarship Awards: AALL offers educational scholarships to law school graduates who are interested in attending library school to become law librarians. Many law librarians have both a JD and a Masters in Library and Information Science. The AALL website has information and links to all the scholarship applications, including the Library School Scholarship for those with Law Degrees. Minority applicants may also apply for the George A. Strait Minority Scholarship at the same time, using the same application. For questions about AALL, careers in law librarianship, or scholarship opportunities, email Brendan Starkey, a member of the Scholarship Awards Jury, or Louis Rosen, Chair of the Scholarship Awards Jury.   • International Human Rights Law Summer School: The University of Oxford’s International Human Rights Law Summer School offers participants the opportunity to follow an intensive program of university-level study in international human rights law within the surroundings of New College, Oxford. The program is taught by an internationally recognized faculty, including our own David Kaye, Director of UCI Law’s International Justice Clinic, and combines both academic and practical experience. Applications are due Friday, April 1.
