New Announcements and Deadlines

2Ls & 3Ls: External Mock Trial Team: Join UCI Law's Mock Trial Team and compete at the National Trial Competition on February 9th-11th in LA County. The Trial Team will begin practices this fall and will be coached by several seasoned trial attorneys from Orange County. Interested students can email the Mock Trial Board at lawmocktrial@lawnet.uci.edu.

M. Katherine Baird Darmer Equality Scholarship: The Orange County Lavender Bar Association (OCBLA) and the Orange County Equality Coalition (OCEC) will award qualified law students who demonstrate commitment to advancing equality for the LGBTQIA+ community. The deadline to apply is September 29th.

Bar Exam Stipend: The Vietnamese American Bar Association of Southern California (VABASC) will award a $1,500 stipend to an eligible student or recent graduate who is planning on taking the February or July 2024 California bar exam. The recipient will be recognized and awarded at the VABASC Installation Gala on November 2nd. Learn more details and apply by October 20th.

UPCOMING LAW SCHOOL EVENTS

Mock Trial Competition: All 2Ls are invited to participate in the Preliminary Round on Saturday, October 21st, which will consist of a solo performance scored by experienced trial attorneys. The top four competitors will move on to the Final Trial on Saturday, November 4th where they will be paired into teams of two and represent the prosecution or the defense. The Final Trial will be presided over by a judicial officer and will be scored by local trial attorneys. 1Ls can also volunteer to be witnesses in the competition. Please join the board for an Information Session on September 26th from 12:00pm to 1:00pm in LAW 3500

1L Outlining Workshop: LLSA, FGP, and APALSA are hosting a virtual workshop for their members and members of other affinity groups on Monday, October 2nd from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. A Google form will be sent to members. Please reach out to your affinity group board if you would like to attend.

Reed Smith Law Student Mental Health Summit: This virtual event will address the mental health of aspiring lawyers and provide proactive steps students can take to prioritize their mental health and self-care during law school. Register to attend on Thursday, October 12th from 6:15am to 1:30pm

ABA "Lifting Our Voices, Charting the Future" Presidential Speaker SeriesThese fireside chats will spotlight trailblazers and world leaders who are shaping the course of our collective future, promote dialogue, civility, and exposure to diverse viewpoints, innovative ideas, and career insights. New episodes will be released on selected Thursdays at 12:00pm.

Student Health Center's COVID InformationPromoting a healthy environment at UCI Law is a collective effort of everyone in our community—students, staff, and faculty. Your individual choices directly affect the well-being of others. You should be familiar with and follow the guidelines outlined on the Student Health Center’s COVID Information and Updates page (https://shc.uci.edu/covid-information-and-updates), which includes information about COVID symptoms and what do if you test positive or think you might have been a close contact. You should also be alert for and follow any additional UCI public health policies that may be announced from time to time.

Please do not come to class if you are feeling sick or exhibiting COVID symptoms. Instructors have been strongly encouraged to provide access to class recordings for students who miss a class session for this reason. Please consult your instructor’s syllabus for more information and ask your instructor if you have questions.

The Other Baris a network of recovering lawyers, judges, and law students throughout California who are dedicated to assisting others with the legal profession. Join their weekly Wednesday Night Statewide Law Student Meetings from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. Contact The Other Bar to become a member and attend!

Graduate Student Therapy GroupJoin these therapy group sessions on Tuesdays from 9:30am to 11:00am (beginning the week of September 25th) to receive and provide support, learn about self and others, and discuss techniques to cope with struggles. Contact the Counseling Center at (949)824-6457 to schedule a pre-group screening today.

UCDC Law Info Sessions: Join UCDC Law Program Director, Nicole Lehtman and current UCDC law students for a panel discussion about externship opportunities in Washington, DC.

Mental Health Week: I.R.A.C. (Intention, Respect and Care) - Law Student Successes on the Continued Path to Becoming Healthy New Lawyers: Speakers from ABA Commission and Lawyer Assistance Programs (CoLAP) will present on a panel on Monday, October 16th from 10:00am to 11:00am. They will discuss the positive well-being and mental health experiences they received as law school students. Register to attend.  

The Diversity Student Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Summit: This event will include ADR professionals, litigators, and in-house counsel from varies backgrounds that will discuss the importance of networking, connecting with mentors, gaining relevant experience, and much more. Join them on November 18th-19th at the American Arbitration Association in New York, NY. Review the application process and apply by October 9th.
