New Announcements and Deadlines

|
CalFresh + Government Shutdown: The issuance of CalFresh benefits for November are expected to be delayed due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. Please view further details related to the delay and resources to stay supported in this document. Students can stay updated on the status of university-wide operations at this official Federal Government Shutdown website by UC Irvine. The team at the Basic Needs Center is currently planning measures to support students impacted by the delays in early November. Further information will be announced at the end of October via the newsletter, Instagram, and website.

The Limits of Executive Power: “Can the President Just Fire a Member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors and What is the Potential Impact?”: Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, 12:00pm – 1:00pm, MPAA 430: The UCI Law EDI Committee invites you to join us in this next discussion in our series. UC Irvine Economics Professor Gary Richardson is an expert in Economics and History and was the Founding Historian of the Federal Reserve System. As such he was cited on multiple occasions in amicus briefs filed in the Trump v. Cook litigation addressing the Executive Branch’s power to dismiss members of the Federal Reserve without oversight. Mobile Food Pantry Fall 2025: Student Housing, in collaboration with UC Irvine Basic Needs Center, will be hosting a mobile food pantry distribution date on Thursday, November 13th, 11am – 2pm – Palo Verde Housing, adjacent to Palo Verde Community Room. This date is open to all currently enrolled UC Irvine students. Please book a pantry appointment starting on 11/3 as there will be no walk-in line on Mobile Food Pantry days. Questions? 3Ls: Federal Bar Association Inland Empire Chapter Law Student Scholarship: This $1000 scholarship is awarded to a student based on the applicant’s connection to the Inland Empire, academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and outstanding personal qualities. Apply here by December 1.

America's Next Top Trial Lawyer: This virtual online advocacy competition organized by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office and UCLA School of Law will award monetary prizes to students judged to submit the best closing argument. Participants can choose whether to submit an argument on behalf of prosecution or defense. Students selected to participate will receive a fact pattern on November 25. Register here.
OCWLA Foundation Bar Stipends: The OCWLA Foundation is pleased to provide $1,000 Bar Stipend Awards to worthy law students about to take the bar exam. The award is given to the student(s) that best exemplifies the mission of OCWLA, and a commitment to scholarship, community service, advancement of women or women’s issues, financial need, and to Orange County, California. Apply by November 20, 2025 for a February 2026 bar stipend. Apply by April 20, 2026 for a July 2025 bar stipend.

Learn Legal Research Basics: Lexis has shared a short Legal Research training that walks through the fundamentals of conducting effective research using Lexis. After watching the recording, you can take a quick two-question quiz to earn 700 Lexis points (equal to a $10 gift card on the Lexis Rewards site). Know Your Rights: Refer to the information in this Know Your Rights guide provided by UCOP for immigrant legal services. Copies have been posted on the student bulletin boards within the Law School and pocket/wallet-sized cards are available for pickup in the Student Affairs and Student Services Suite (MPAA 210). The suite also has red cards available from the Immigrant Legal Resource Center.
