  • Spring Interview Program: Employers from all sectors are collecting application materials via Symplicity and will be scheduling interviews throughout the spring for both summer and post-graduate positions. The Spring Interview Program runs through the end of March and each employer has an individual application deadline. A list of employers, their bidding deadlines, and class levels invited to apply is posted on the CDO website here. You can view participating employers and begin placing bids (applying for positions of interest) on Symplicity.


  • Externships Now Available on Symplicity: The Externship Catalog has been replaced...by Symplicity. All active Summer and Fall 2016 Externship listings from the Externship Catalog are now in Symplicity.


  • Public Interest/Public Sector Career Day (PICD): February 6 (Saturday), 8:30am Registration, 9:00am - 5:00pm Career Day, UCLA School of Law. PICD is this weekend! Join law students from around the region to table-talk with employers from public interest organizations, government agencies and offices, and private public interest firms throughout Southern California.

  • Summer and Post-Graduate Placements List: The Placements list, including all practice settings in which UCI Law students have spent their summers, is updated and posted on the CDO website here. The list also includes the names of students who worked for each employer and are willing to talk about their experience.

CDO Workshops
  • Getting a CA State Job: February 11 (Thursday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, LAW 3750. Work for the Golden State! In this workshop, the CDO will discuss what legal positions are available and will describe the hiring process, from state exam, to application, to interview. We will further de-mystify state “exams,” review exam prompts and responses, and provide students with a step-by-step checklist for getting a California state job. Please RSVP on Symplicity.


  • Patent Bar Examination Information Session: February 18 (Thursday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, MPAA 408. If you are a student with an undergraduate degree (or at least two years of coursework) in engineering, computer science, or the hard sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, and some related fields), and are interested in becoming a Patent Agent or Attorney, Practising Law Institute (PLI) invites you to a presentation by Mark Dighton, Director of PLI's Law School Relations and of their Patent Office Exam Course. Topics for discussion include the latest information on the Patent Office Exam, who can sit for the Exam, how the Exam works now that it is administered electronically and “on demand,” when you should take the Exam, how the America Invents Act has impacted the Exam, and recommendations on when and how to study for the Exam. Scholarships to PLI's other IP programs will also be discussed. Please RSVP on Symplicity.

  • Strategic Career Planning for Post-Graduate Success: February 19 (Friday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, EDU 1111. This interactive program will introduce 1Ls to the essential components of a comprehensive and strategic career action plan. The workshop will focus on activities and developing skills that enhance students’ short-term and long-term employment outcomes and professional success in the private and public sectors. Topics to be discussed include how to formulate a career plan, identify practice areas of interest, research employers, develop relevant substantive expertise, and engage in strategic and productive professional networking. Students will be encouraged to ask questions, share ideas, and participate in a group conversation regarding these topics. Lunch will be provided.

  • 5th Annual Small Firm & Corporate Counsel Reception: March 7 (Monday), 6:00pm - 7:30pm, MPAA Executive Commons. The reception will give UCI Law students an opportunity to meet and network with attorneys from small to mid-size firms and in-house counsel offices. Dean Chemerinsky will welcome attorneys to the reception with opening remarks. Light refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to Brian Tanada with "Reception RSVP" in the email subject line.


  • Finding & Applying for Judicial Clerkships: March 11 (Friday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, EDU 1131. Dean Erwin Chemerinsky will moderate a panel of recent alumni who began their legal careers through clerkships. The panel will discuss why clerkships are valuable and how they impact subsequent career options. Assistant Dean Ann Chernicoff will explain timelines and deadlines, the process for completing applications, and how the CDO can assist with clerkship applications. All students with an interest in judicial clerkships should attend. This event is part of the First-Year Friday series but is open to students in all class years who are considering clerkships. Please RSVP on Symplicity. Lunch will be provided.

  • Orange County Coalition for Diversity in the Law Speed Networking Reception: February 10 (Wednesday), 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Tangata Restaurant at The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The Orange County Coalition for Diversity in the Law (OCCDL) is a collaborative effort of professionals from leading Orange County law firms and other community partners committed to achieving cultural diversity in recruiting and retaining law students and attorneys in Orange County. This event is an opportunity for 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls to meet prominent legal professionals in the area. The event is free of charge and will feature a hosted bar and hors d'oeuvres.   • Knobbe Martens Dinner Reception: February 11 (Thursday), 5:30pm - 8:00pm, Eureka! in Irvine. Knobbe Martens invites 1L, 2L, and 3L students with technical degrees or a demonstrated interest in trademark prosecution to join us for a dinner reception. Meet with lawyers from one of the country's most prominent intellectual property law firms to learn more about the practice, the people, and how the firm offers an opportunity to build a rewarding career in IP law.   • Daniel's Inn 21st Annual Conference: February 27 (Saturday), 8:30am Registration, 9:00am - 1:00pm Presentation and Discussion, Chapman University. A fellowship of non-denominational Christian lawyers and judges invites you to join in prayer, fellowship, and spiritual growth.   • Judicial Clerkship Institute: March 17 - 18 (Thursday - Friday), Pepperdine School of Law, Malibu. Pepperdine University School of Law is hosting the 2-day William Matthew Byrne, Jr. Judicial Clerkship Institute. Any law student or law graduate who has been selected for or has entered a clerkship with a federal magistrate, district, or appellate court judge is eligible to attend. The goal of this institute is to equip law clerks to make significant and valuable contributions to the judges for whom they work and the judiciary as a whole. The registration fee has been reduced to $60 for local law school participants. For more information and to register, click here.


  • Prosecutor Academy: May 16 - 18 (Monday - Wednesday), Pepperdine School of Law, Malibu. 1Ls are invited to a 3-day seminar to learn from talented prosecutors how to try a case. Students will handle a real case file, practice all phases of jury trials, and receive informed feedback. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, March 1. For more information, see the event flyer.

  • 3L Diversity ScholarshipAny diverse California 3L who plans to sit for the July 2016 California bar exam, and who plans to practice public interest law in California, is eligible to apply for a BarBri Bar exam review course (valued at more than $4,000) and cash awards. Applications are due Tuesday, February 16 at 5:00pm. The application and further information can be found here.

  • Equal Justice Works-Rural Summer Legal Corps: EJW opened the application process for more than 30 positions nationwide through its Rural Summer Legal Corps program ($4,000 stipend). The program connects public interest students with LSC-funded civil legal aid organizations to address pressing legal issues facing rural communities. Applications are due Monday, February 29 and are available here.

  • 2016 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award: The Orange County Asian American Bar Association is offering its Outstanding Student Award to recognize local law students who have made significant contributions to OCAABA and the local Orange County legal and general community. The $500 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award will be awarded at OCAABA's Installation and Awards Gala on April 26. Applications are due Monday, February 29 at 5:00pm. Application information and forms can be found here.


  • WLALA Public Interest Grant Program: The Foundation of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles is accepting applications for its Fran Kandel Public Interest Grant program. The Grant will fund one or two projects to be completed during summer 2016 that benefit residents of the greater Los Angeles area. The maximum amount of the Grant is $5,000. Applications are due Thursday, March 10, 2016, at 5:00pm. Additional information and application materials are available on the Grant website and in the Grant Letter.

  • American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) Scholarship Awards: AALL offers several educational scholarships to law school graduates who are interested in attending library school to become law librarians. Many law librarians have both a JD and a Masters in Library and Information Science. The AALL website has information and links to all the scholarship applications, including the Library School Scholarship for those with Law Degrees. Minority applicants may also apply for the George A. Strait Minority Scholarship at the same time, using the same application. For questions about AALL, careers in law librarianship, or scholarship opportunities, email Brendan Starkey, a member of the Scholarship Awards Jury, or Louis Rosen, Chair of the Scholarship Awards Jury. Applications are due Friday, April 1, and may be accessed here.
