Announcements
  • Externships Now Available on Symplicity: The Externship Catalog has been replaced...by Symplicity. All active Summer 2016 Externship listings from the Externship Catalog are now in Symplicity, and Fall 2016 Externships will be added to Symplicity over the coming weeks. The Externship Catalog is no longer being updated.


  • Public Interest/Public Sector Career Day (PICD): February 6 (Saturday), 8:30am Registration, 9:00am - 5:00pm Career Day, UCLA School of Law. This inter-law-school event, held annually each spring, provides law students with the opportunity to participate in a formal interview process for summer employment and to table-talk with participating employers. Representatives from public interest organizations, government agencies and offices, and private public interest firms throughout Southern California will be in attendance. The event also provides a great opportunity to network and learn about the array of public sector employers in our region. During the bidding period prior to the event, students may submit resumes and cover letters through Symplicity to secure interviews at the Career Day. An email with Symplicity instructions was sent on Monday, December 21. Plan to have your resume and cover letter reviewed by your primary CDO counselor well in advance of the deadline.

  • Spring Interview Program: We are pleased to announce the 2016 Spring Interview Program! Employers from all sectors are collecting application materials via Symplicity and will be scheduling interviews throughout the spring for both summer and post-graduate positions. Although the Spring Interview Program runs through the end of March, each employer will have an individual application deadline. A list of employers, their bidding deadlines, and class levels invited to apply is posted on the CDO website here.


  • Summer and Post-Graduate Placements List: The Placements list, including all practice settings in which UCI Law students have spent their summers, is updated and posted on the CDO's website here. The list also includes the names of students who worked for each employer and are willing to talk about their experience, which you may find particularly useful in planning PICD bids.

  • 1L Electronic Signatures: To include your electronic signature on your cover letter: (1) Open your electronic signature PDF document, (2) Click "Tools," (3) Click "Pages," (4) Click "Crop," (5) Using your cursor, highlight your signature to create a box around it, (6) Double click the box, (7) Click "OK," (8) Enter the "File" menu and select "Save As Other" → Image → PNG, (9) Open your cover letter Word document, (10) Insert cursor where the signature should appear, (11) Click the Insert tab, Pictures, select your PNG file, (12) Rotate as necessary (Format tab), (13) Adjust size as desired. CDO Workshops
  • UCLA Public Interest Career Day Information Session: January 15 (Friday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, EDU 1111. In preparation for the Public Interest/Public Sector Career Day (PICD), which will be held on Saturday, February 6, at UCLA School of Law, UCI Law's CDO is presenting a Public Interest Career Day Information Session. We will review the registration process, what to expect at PICD, tips on table talk, and how to get the most out of the day. Attendance is strongly encouraged for all students planning to attend PICD, especially 1Ls. Lunch will be provided.


  • CDO Open House: January 20 (Wednesday), 3:30pm - 5:30pm, MPAA Suite 210. If you have not already visited the CDO since our move this past summer from EDU, come by to see our new location in MPAA! Even if you have already visited the CDO's new space, come share a snack!


  • CDO/Community Fellows: 1L Interview Mixer: January 22 (Friday), 1:00pm - 2:30pm, Law School Courtyard. Current and past Community Fellows will be present to answer 1L questions about interviewing, including proper dress and etiquette, common interview questions, and more! Each Community Fellow will be wearing a suit they are comfortable wearing in interviews to showcase the variety of options. 1Ls in attendance will also have the chance to win prizes in an interactive challenge. Casual attire is acceptable for 1Ls. Light refreshments will be provided.


  • LAIPLA Law School Road Show: January 27 (Wednesday), 5:30pm - 7:00pm, MPAA 408. The Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association (LAIPLA) will be visiting UCI Law School to discuss careers in intellectual property, including patent, trademark, and copyright law. Experienced IP practitioners with law firm and in-house experience will be panelists for the event. Confirmed panelists include: Don Pua (Western Digital), Catherine Holland (Knobbe Martens), Bob Fish (Fish & Tsang), Jeffrey Thomas (Gibson Dunn), and David Dremann (Knobbe Martens). Students will have an opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of the speakers’ remarks. For anyone interested in learning more about LAIPLA and the Association’s membership, this will be an invaluable opportunity. Pizza and refreshments will be provided! Please RSVP on Symplicity.


  • U.S. Navy JAG Corps Information Session: February 2 (Tuesday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, LAW 3500. Captain Shannon Gearhart will be visiting UCI Law for an informal information session to speak with students who might be interested in applying to the U.S. Navy JAG Corps. The mission of the U.S. Navy JAG Corps is to provide solutions to legal issues involving military operations, organization, and personnel wherever and whenever such solutions are required. The mission's primary focus is on operations, accountability, Sailor legal readiness, and Navy legal readiness. Please join this information session to learn more about opportunities with the U.S. Navy JAG Corps!


  • Getting a CA State Job: February 11 (Thursday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, LAW 3750. Work for the Golden State! In this workshop, the CDO will discuss what legal positions are available and will describe the hiring process, from state exam, to application, to interview. We will further de-mystify state “exams,” review exam prompts and responses, and provide students with a step-by-step checklist for getting a California state job. Please RSVP on Symplicity.

  • CELA Barristers Committee Kickoff Talk Show: January 21 (Thursday), San Diego and Los Angeles. The California Employment Law Association is hosting a free event next week on careers in plaintiff's employment law for interested law students and alumni. The event will be held in San Diego (Oceanside) and Los Angeles, and registrants may attend either. Barristers will share their insights on what law books and firm partners don't tell you, but you need to know; financial survival in a plaintiff's employment practice; must-have advice for your first major case; the highs and lows of starting out as a new lawyer at a firm or in solo practice; and more.   • OCBA Judges' Night & Annual Meeting: January 21 (Thursday), 5:30pm Registration and Social, 6:30pm Dinner and Program, Irvine Marriott.   • Southern California Lawyer Entrepreneurs Monthly Meeting: January 30 (Saturday), 11:00am, Ledlow Restaurant in Los Angeles. You are invited to join the next meeting of the Southern California Lawyer Entrepreneurs (SCLE), a group for attorneys who have recently (within the last 5 years) started their solo practice or small firm, and those considering starting a firm.   • Orange County Coalition for Diversity in the Law Speed Networking Reception: February 10 (Wednesday), 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The Orange County Coalition for Diversity in the Law (OCCDL) is a collaborative effort of professionals from leading Orange County law firms and other community partners committed to achieving cultural diversity in recruiting and retaining law students and attorneys in Orange County.   • Knobbe Martens Dinner Reception: February 11 (Thursday), 5:30pm - 8:00pm, Eureka! in Irvine. Knobbe Martens invites 1L, 2L, and 3L students with technical degrees or a demonstrated interest in trademark prosecution to join us for a dinner reception. Meet with lawyers from one of the country's most prominent intellectual property law firms to learn more about the practice, the people, and why the firm offers an opportunity to build a rewarding career in IP law.   • 3L Diversity ScholarshipAny diverse California 3L who plans to sit for the July 2016 California bar exam, and who plans to practice public interest law in California, is eligible to apply for a BarBri Bar exam review course (valued at more than $4,000) and cash awards. Applications are due by Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at 5:00pm. The application and further information can be found here.


  • 2016 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award: OCAABA is offering its Outstanding Student Award to recognize local law students who have made significant contributions to OCAABA and the local Orange County legal and general community. The $500 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award will be awarded at OCAABA's Installation and Awards Gala on April 26, 2016. Application information and forms can be found here. The deadline is 5:00pm PST on Monday, February 29, 2016.
