CLEAR co-sponsors a reading group every academic year. The Perspectives Reading Group serves as an informal setting where students and professors can examine issues of concern or importance to marginalized groups, focusing on a particular issue or demographic group at each meeting. Details >

Symposia

CLEAR hosts symposia bringing together academics, legal practictioners, policy makers, and other contributors to examine complex topics such as critical race theory and the interplays between race, class, gender, justice and the law. Details >

Film Screenings

CLEAR hosts screenings throughout the year in which films addressing issues of race, gender, marginalized communities and other topics of interest are presented to introduce particular perspectives and facilitate audience discussion. Details>

  • Oct. 28, 2016: What is the Future of Asian American Activism?
    Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial minority population in the country. Much of this growth stems from migration. Recent studies show that three out of four Asian Americans were born outside of the United States and that more migrants come to the United States from Asia and the Pacific Islands than from any other part of the  world. What does this rapid growth mean for where they will align themselves on public policies like affirmative action? To what extent are Asian Americans joining other groups and to what extent are they striking out on their own? In short: where will Asian Americans position themselves in the U.S. hierarchy? This talk will feature Professor Jennifer Lee and Professor Judy Tzu-Chun Wu, both experts on Asian American communities, who will address this question. Facilitated by UCI Law student The-An Hoang-Nguyen, with introductory remarks by Professor Stephen Lee.
  • Feb. 5, 2016: Author Meets Readers: Normal Life by Dean Spade
    Dean Spade, Associate Professor of Law at Seattle University School of Law, discussed the newly revised and expanded edition of the book, Normal Life: Administrative Violence, Critical Trans Politics, and the Limits of Law (Duke University Press, 2015). Professor Spade teaches classes related to sexual orientation and gender identity law and law and social movements and has published extensively on issues of law and injustice.
