Daniel Lammie

Environmental Law Scholar – Class of 2022

Prior to attending UCI Law, Daniel Lammie earned his BS in Geology from the University of Pittsburgh and wrote an undergraduate thesis on layer parallel shortening in the Central Appalachian fold and thrust belt. He then served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Zambia’s Muchinga Province and worked as a Forestry Technician in Southern Utah with the U.S. Forest Service’s Forest Inventory and Analysis Program.

Hoping to pursue a career in environmental law, Dan chose to attend UCI Law because of the school’s robust clinical program. At UCI Law, he has had the opportunity not to only learn from expert faculty in the classroom, but also gain experience working firsthand with clients and addressing real-world issues.

As a first-year law student at UCI Law, Dan took International Legal Analysis with Distinguished Professor Joseph F. C. DiMento, touching on topics in International Environmental Law. He also volunteered with the City Council Comments pro bono project, tracking city activity during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic and submitting public comments on city actions that adversely impacted homeless and housing insecure individuals.

Last summer, Dan worked at the San Diego City Attorney’s Office and gained experience working on a broad range of assignments that touched on many different areas of the law, including constitutional law, tort law, and the California Coastal Act.

As a second-year law student, Dan currently serves on the Environmental Law Society Board as the Director of Outreach. In addition, he is enrolled in UCI Law’s Environmental Law Clinic and is taking Climate Justice with Professor Michael Robinson-Dorn.

In the Environmental Law Clinic, Dan works on two matters. First, Dan is working with Orange County Coastkeeper to help restore public access to the California coast in Newport Beach. Second, he is working with several organizations to help preserve an ecological treasure and valuable cultural resources in the Mojave Desert.

Dan also works as an Articles Editor on the UC Irvine Law Review and a Staff Editor on the UC Irvine Journal of International, Transnational, and Comparative Law. He previously served as a Research Fellow to Professor Grace C. Tonner and a Research Assistant to Professor Christopher R. Leslie.

This coming summer, Dan will work as a Summer Associate at Haynes and Boone, LLP in the firm’s Orange County office. After graduation, he hopes to pursue a career in litigation.
