Announcements
  • Spring Interview Program: Employers from all sectors are collecting application materials via Symplicity and will be scheduling interviews throughout the spring for both summer and post-graduate positions. The Spring Interview Program runs through the end of March and each employer has an individual application deadline. A list of employers, their bidding deadlines, and class levels invited to apply is posted on the CDO website here. You can view participating employers and begin placing bids (applying for positions of interest) on Symplicity by clicking the OCI tab in the blue navigation bar at the top of the page and selecting “2016 Spring Interview Program” from the drop down “Session” menu. You will only be able to view positions available to your class year.


  • Externships Now Available on Symplicity: The Externship Catalog has been replaced...by Symplicity. All active Summer and Fall 2016 Externship listings from the Externship Catalog are now in Symplicity. The Externship Catalog is no longer available.


  • Public Interest/Public Sector Career Day (PICD): February 6 (Saturday), 8:30am Registration, 9:00am - 5:00pm Career Day, UCLA School of Law. This inter-law-school event, held annually each spring, provides law students with the opportunity to participate in a formal interview process for summer employment and to table-talk with participating employers. Representatives from public interest organizations, government agencies and offices, and private public interest firms throughout Southern California will be in attendance. The event also provides a great opportunity to network and learn about the array of public sector employers in our region.

  • Summer and Post-Graduate Placements List: The Placements list, including all practice settings in which UCI Law students have spent their summers, is updated and posted on the CDO website here. The list also includes the names of students who worked for each employer and are willing to talk about their experience.

CDO Workshops
  • U.S. Navy JAG Corps Information Session: February 2 (Tuesday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, LAW 3500. Captain Shannon Gearhart will be visiting UCI Law for an informal information session to speak with students who might be interested in applying to the U.S. Navy JAG Corps. The mission of the U.S. Navy JAG Corps is to provide solutions to legal issues involving military operations, organization, and personnel whenever and wherever such solutions are required.


  • Getting a CA State Job: February 11 (Thursday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, LAW 3750. Work for the Golden State! In this workshop, the CDO will discuss what legal positions are available and will describe the hiring process, from state exam, to application, to interview. We will further de-mystify state “exams,” review exam prompts and responses, and provide students with a step-by-step checklist for getting a California state job. Please RSVP on Symplicity.


  • Patent Bar Examination Information Session: February 18 (Thursday), 12:00pm - 1:00pm, MPAA 408. If you are a student with an undergraduate degree (or at least two years of coursework) in engineering, computer science, or the hard sciences (chemistry, biology, physics, and some related fields), and are interested in becoming a Patent Agent or Attorney, Practising Law Institute (PLI) invites you to a presentation by Mark Dighton, Director of PLI's Law School Relations and of their Patent Office Exam Course. Topics for discussion include the latest information on the Patent Office Exam, who can sit for the Exam, how the Exam works now that it is administered electronically and “on demand,” when you should take the Exam, how the America Invents Act has impacted the Exam, and recommendations on when and how to study for the Exam. Scholarships to PLI's other IP programs will also be discussed. Please RSVP on Symplicity.

  • Southern California Lawyer Entrepreneurs Monthly Meeting: January 30 (Saturday), 11:00am, Ledlow Restaurant in Los Angeles. You are invited to join the next meeting of the Southern California Lawyer Entrepreneurs (SCLE), a group for attorneys who have recently (within the last 5 years) started their own solo practices or small firms, and for those considering starting a firm.   • 17th Annual JOLT Career Forum: February 3 (Wednesday), 5:00pm - 8:00pm, UCLA Faculty Center. The Career Forum gives Southern California law students the opportunity to meet established and emerging IP and technology law firms. This year, students with no technical background are invited to attend as well as students with technical training. Students are encouraged to bring resumes, as some firms intend to satisfy hiring needs. At least 15 firms are scheduled to attend, including Jones Day, Fish & Richardson, Kirkland & Ellis, Sheppard Mullin, and White & Case. This event is free and there will be an abundance of free food and drink. Please dress in business casual attire. No RSVP is required.   • FBI/CIA Career Opportunity and Networking Event: February 8 (Monday) & February 9 (Tuesday), 7:00pm - 8:30pm (formal presentation), 8:30pm - 9:00pm (networking), Orange County Family Justice Center in Anaheim. You are invited to learn about both Agencies and their career opportunities and to network with FBI and CIA representatives. Seating is limited.   • Orange County Coalition for Diversity in the Law Speed Networking Reception: February 10 (Wednesday), 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Tangata Restaurant at The Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The Orange County Coalition for Diversity in the Law (OCCDL) is a collaborative effort of professionals from leading Orange County law firms and other community partners committed to achieving cultural diversity in recruiting and retaining law students and attorneys in Orange County. This event is an opportunity for 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls to meet prominent legal professionals in the area. The event will feature a hosted bar and hors d'oeuvres and is free of charge.   • Knobbe Martens Dinner Reception: February 11 (Thursday), 5:30pm - 8:00pm, Eureka! in Irvine. Knobbe Martens invites 1L, 2L, and 3L students with technical degrees or a demonstrated interest in trademark prosecution to join us for a dinner reception. Meet with lawyers from one of the country's most prominent intellectual property law firms to learn more about the practice, the people, and how the firm offers an opportunity to build a rewarding career in IP law.   • Daniel's Inn 21st Annual Conference: February 27 (Saturday), 8:30am Registration, 9:00am - 1:00pm Presentation and Discussion, Chapman University. A fellowship of non-denominational Christian lawyers and judges invites you to join in prayer, fellowship, and spiritual growth.   • Prosecutor Academy: May 16 - 18 (Monday - Wednesday), Pepperdine School of Law, Malibu. 1Ls are invited to a 3-day seminar to learn from talented prosecutors how to try a case. Students will handle a real case file, practice all phases of jury trials, and receive informed feedback. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, March 1. For more information, see the event flyer.

  • 3L Diversity ScholarshipAny diverse California 3L who plans to sit for the July 2016 California bar exam, and who plans to practice public interest law in California, is eligible to apply for a BarBri Bar exam review course (valued at more than $4,000) and cash awards. Applications are due by Tuesday, February 16 at 5:00pm. The application and further information can be found here.


  • 2016 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award: The Orange County Asian American Bar Association is offering its Outstanding Student Award to recognize local law students who have made significant contributions to OCAABA and the local Orange County legal and general community. The $500 OCAABA Outstanding Student Award will be awarded at OCAABA's Installation and Awards Gala on April 26. Application information and forms can be found here. The deadline is 5:00pm on Monday, February 29.


  • WLALA Public Interest Grant Program: The Foundation of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles is accepting applications for its Fran Kandel Public Interest Grant program. Applications must be received by 5:00pm on Thursday, March 10, 2016. The Grant will fund one or two projects to be completed during summer 2016 that benefit residents of the greater Los Angeles area. The maximum amount of the Grant is $5,000. Additional information and application materials are available on the Grant website and in the Grant Letter.
