Library Announcements for Final Exams

Hours. Library hours are extended from November 30th – December 18th.  Current hours are always available on the library’s website:
Study Rooms.  Do not reserve library study rooms for your take-home exams.  With the exception of the open study rooms,  the remainder of the study rooms are for group use only and have a strict three-hour limit.  Staff will not give keys to individuals, and by reserving a room in advance you are blocking those working in groups from reserving it.
Quiet Study.  The library is supposed to be a quiet place to study at all times, and this is especially true as we near finals.  Please keep your conversations to a minimum and your voices low. Talking on your cell phone is never permitted in any area of the library, including the restrooms, copy rooms, and/or study rooms.  While talking in all areas of the library should be kept to a minimum, the library is designating the California room as a quiet study space effective immediately.
Access. There is restricted access during the Reading and Exam period, which means the library is not open to visitors, including law student guests.  Continue to monitor your belongings at all times, since this is a bad time to lose unattended laptops, wallets, or other valuable items.

"The House of Murder" with Ian Burney, 1517 SBSG, UCI
In this talk, Ian Burney will use the notorious case of the serial murderer John Christie (1953) to explore the contours of English homicide investigation at mid-century. He will focus in particular on the way that the Christie investigation spectacularly demonstrated a relatively new framework for forensic activity – what we now call “CSI.” His analysis will show how post-war English murder investigation was shaped by new approaches to the crime scene and by developments in lab-based analysis of crime scene objects which reconfigured the relationship between bodies, spaces, and traces. The investigation into Christie’s “House of Murder” at 10 Rillington Place transformed it into a macabre excavation site, the stage for a prolonged, meticulous, and intensely public search for forensically actionable evidence of the murders committed within it. In outlining the story of this single case, Burney will also reflect upon what history can contribute to debates about the state of contemporary forensic practice.
