Non-Matriculating (Visiting)
J.D. Students
Students who have completed the equivalent of two full-time years at another ABA-approved law school may apply for visiting student status at UC Irvine School of Law for one semester or their entire third year.
Admission is granted at the discretion of UC Irvine School of Law, and candidates must demonstrate compelling personal and/or intellectual reasons for seeking to spend the semester or year with us. Visiting students are responsible for meeting all costs associated with attending UCI Law for their planned enrollment, as well as meet any financial obligations to their home law school, and they will ultimately obtain the J.D. from their original institution.
For the Spring 2013 semester, we will accept applications at LSAC.org through December 7, 2012. For year-long study commencing in Fall 2013 through Spring 2014, we will accept applications at LSAC.org from May 1, 2013 through July 1, 2013.
There is no fee to apply.
General Application Instructions
As part of the online application process at LSAC.org, applicants must:
- Register with the Credential Assembly Service (CAS) of the LSAC. The LSAC CAS collects and validates all data, letters of recommendation, and transcripts on behalf of the applicant as a service to member law schools. Applicants who are or were directly enrolled at a foreign institution and have earned more than a year's worth of undergraduate credit or who received their undergraduate degrees from an institution outside of the U.S., its territories, or Canada, must also register with LSAC's Credential Assembly Service.
- Upload a résumé; a personal statement; and an explanation of why you are applying to the University of California, Irvine School of Law as components of your LSAC application. Please submit your essays in Microsoft Word, document formatted to 8 1/2 x 11 inches, with 12-point font and one-inch margins. Please also double-space each line. Most importantly, please include your name and LSAC number in the top header of each page.
- Abide by the 500-word limit for each statement. The Admissions Committee will not read beyond the stated limits.
- Submit letters of recommendation from two (2) law professors directly to LSAC. Please be certain to designate the UC Irvine School of Law as a recipient of these letters. We will accept a maximum of four (4) letters for this cycle through LSAC.
- Request a letter of good standing, including law school class rank if available, from the Registrar or appropriate official of the applicant's current law school. This letter should be sent directly to:

- Request that a copy of their official transcript from their current law school be sent directly to the UC Irvine School of Law at the address listed above.
- Request that a copy of their final official undergraduate transcript noting the date and awarding of a Bachelor's Degree be sent directly to the UC Irvine School of Law at the address listed above.
- Provide an electronic signature at the end of their LSAC application form to certify the information provided.
Non-matriculants may not enroll in clinical program courses.
Applicants for the Spring 2013 semester will be notified by the end of December 2012 whether they have been accepted as a non-matriculating student. Fall semester and year-long study applicants will be notified by the end of July 2013.
