Pre-Approved Pro Bono Projects - Spring 2010

  • Camp Pendleton Legal Assistance Office: Providing legal assistance to military officers, enlisted service members and their families in areas of family law, consumer law, estate planning, and other issues.
  • Consumer Law Project: Providing in-depth intakes and assistance to clients of the Public Law Center who are completing and filing forms for bankruptcy.
  • Domestic Violence Restraining Orders: Working under the supervision of the law firm of Latham and Watkins, LLP to represent victims of domestic violence seeking restraining orders.
  • Foster Care Handbook: Working with the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and the Western Center of Law and Poverty to update the Foster Care Handbook, which is used by advocates throughout the state arguing for benefits for foster children and their caretakers.
  • Foster Caregivers Advocacy Program: Teaming up with attorneys from the law firm of Manatt, Phelps, and Phillips, under the direction of the Alliance for Children’s Rights, to provide assistance to caregivers of foster children fighting for appropriate funding and services for children in their care.
  • General Relief Advocacy Project (GRAP): Assisting clients at General Relief offices, under the supervision of an attorney from Public Counsel, with shelter, food, health, transportation and social service needs.
  • Health Consumer Action Center: Providing policy advocacy and direct assistance for low-income clients, served by Legal Aid Society of Orange County, to access healthcare services and solve problems with public benefits and/or medical insurance.
  • Housing Project: Assisting clients of the Public Law Center with issues related to landlord-tenant disputes, including security deposits and habitability issues.
  • Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP): Advocating on behalf of Iraqi refugees, who are likely on immigration hold and are trying to re-start their lives in the United States after fleeing the war.
  • Kids In Need of Defense (KIND): Working with attorneys in the private sector to provide representation to refugee and immigrant children who are going through immigration proceedings without any parent or guardian.
  • Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (Long Beach): Conducting intake at the Long Beach courthouse and providing support and assistance to attorneys in the agency’s Long Beach office.
  • Senior Citizen Legal Advocacy Program: Providing assistance to senior citizens with issues such as Social Security, food stamps, family law, property, homeowners associations, consumer fraud, collection and bankruptcy.
  • Tax Assistance: Working with the Legal Aid Society of Orange County to assist low-income taxpayers to resolve IRS tax problems.
  • U-Visas: Assisting victims of violent crimes, who have cooperated with law enforcement in the investigation related to their crime, to complete forms requesting documented status.
  • Additional opportunities: Students wishing to pursue pro bono opportunities other than those listed here may put a request in writing to Pro Bono Director Anna Davis at adavis@law.uci.edu. The final decision regarding whether work qualifies towards pro bono hours shall be made by the Pro Bono Director.
Pro Bono Celebration 2010

Inaugural Class members celebrated completion of their first semester of
pro bono work in Spring 2010. More than half the class (about 35 students) logged 20 hours or more during this first semester, led by Sam Lam (77 hours), Harnik Shukla (68.5), Isra Shah (60 hours), Vivian Lee (56.5), Susan Lewis (54.5) and Jessica Glynn (53.5).
