Media Advisory: UCI Law to Host Symposium on Access to Clean Water

WHAT: The University of California, Irvine School of Law’s Center for Land, Environment, and Natural Resources (CLEANR) and Brown Rudnick LLP present the Third Annual Fall Symposium on Emerging Issues in Environmental Law Practice, “Desalination: A Solution to Drought and Clean Water Demands?”

The symposium will explore the potential role of desalination as a viable source of clean water in Southern California, as well as developments in desalination technology in other arid regions of the world. Speakers will also identify the challenges and benefits of this technology with the guidance of practitioners and policymakers at the forefront of desalination. Panel topics include:

  • Existing and Operating Projects: Challenges, Benefits and Results
  • Technologies, Regulatory Framework and Market Forces Abroad
  • California Drought Crisis and Desalination
  • Indirect Environmental Impacts

WHO: Frances Spivy-Weber, Vice Chair of the California Water Resources Control Board, will deliver the keynote address. Speakers include Bill Lockyer of Brown Rudnick LLP (former State Treasurer of California); Maureen Gorsen of Alston & Bird LLP (former General Counsel of the California Environmental Protection Agency and former Director of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control); Sean Bothwell of California Coastkeeper Alliance; Ray Hiemstra of Orange County Coastkeeper; Robert Harding of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California; Heather Cooley of The Pacific Institute; Andrew Kingman of Poseidon Water; Jefferey Sellers of the University of Southern California; Dennis Lees of Littoral Ecological & Environmental Sciences; and more.
