Media Advisory: U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer to Deliver Commencement Address at UCI Law on May 9

IRVINE, Calif., May 8, 2015 — U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer will deliver the commencement address for University of California, Irvine School of Law on May 9.

WHAT: UCI Law, recently ranked No. 30 out of 198 accredited law schools by U.S. News & World Report, will celebrate its fourth commencement, in which 114 students are expected to participate. The outstanding students in UCI Law’s Class of 2015 personify the Law School’s commitment to public service:

  • More than 96 percent of the Class of 2015 engaged in volunteer pro bono work during their three years of school, collectively completing more than 12,500 pro bono hours.
  • Approximately 51 percent completed at least 120 pro bono hours — 36 students completed at least 200 hours, and four students completed more than 300 hours.

WHO: The commencement speaker, Barbara Boxer, became a United States Senator in January 1993 after 10 years of service in the House of Representatives and six years on the Marin County Board of Supervisors. In November 2010, she was reelected to her fourth term in the Senate. A national leader on environmental protection, Senator Boxer is the ranking member on the U.S. Senate’s Committee on Environment and Public Works. She is also the vice chair of the Senate Select Committee on Ethics and a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, where she created the first subcommittee ever to focus on global women’s issues.
