UCI Law News September 2015

A quarterly newsletter to keep members of the UCI Law community connected

A Note from Erwin

Dear Friends,

The start of a new academic year is always an exciting time. This fall we welcomed three new top-notch full-time faculty members: Professor Summer Kim, who was a visiting professor at the University of Illinois and who will teach Common  Law Analysis: Contracts and Business Associations; Professor Omri Marian, who comes to us from the University of Florida and will teach tax law courses; and Professor Ken Simons, who was on the faculty for more than 30 years at Boston University Law School and will teach Common Law Analysis: Tort and Statutory Analysis. We also admitted an impressive group of first-year students, our seventh entering class.

We have a new distinction: A recent study of scholarly impact of law school faculties ranked UCI Law No. 6 in the nation, behind Yale, Harvard, University of Chicago, New York University and Stanford. I am particularly proud of this ranking because it is a wonderful reflection of our extraordinary and prolific scholars and teachers at UCI Law.

I’m also delighted about the latest recognition received by the University of California, Irvine. According to newly released U.S. News & World Report rankings, UC Irvine is No. 9 among the nation’s best public universities. Additionally, The New York Times’ 2015 College Access Index, which measured the economic diversity at top colleges in the U.S., ranked UC Irvine No. 1 in helping low-income, talented students.

Rankings, however, do not begin to capture what is truly special about UC Irvine and UCI Law. We’ve taken a bold approach in developing our law courses, and our clinical and pro bono programs are unparalleled. Now we are looking to design a new law school building — one as innovative and forward-looking as our curriculum. I welcome your advice and suggestions as we enter this new phase of creating one of the best law schools in the country.

As always, thank you for your support. I hope you enjoy this latest edition of UCI Law News — highlighting the many accomplishments of our students, alumni, faculty and friends. I also invite you to view the latest video about our very special law school.

Warm regards,
