Mock Trial Competitions
Fall 2012 Mock Trial
This year, students will argue a civil case: Allen v. Neptune, a wrongful death lawsuit based on a scuba-diving accident. Witnesses include the victim's spouse, a scuba expert, the dive leader, and a meteorologist.
Trial Competition: Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012
Final Championship Trial: Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, 7 p.m.
The competition coach is Justin Bernstein, an attorney in Newport Beach. A graduate of UC Berkeley and NYU School of Law, Bernstein formerly worked as an associate at O'Melveny & Myers and now teaches political science at UC Irvine. He is a member of the American Mock Trial Association Board of Directors, was recognized as the 2011 national mock trial coach of the year, and currently coaches the UCI undergraduate team, ranked sixth among 500 teams nationwide.
Beginning in 2012-13, the Law School will begin sending teams of students to participate in national mock trial competitions. It is generally expected that these will be third-year students who participated in the intra-school competition during their second year of law school.
