Guest Speaker Series: Obie Anthony, EDU 1111
Obie Anthony was imprisoned at age 19 for a murder that he did not
commit.  After 17 years of incarceration, his conviction was vacated in
2011 following an investigation by the Northern California Innocence
Project and a team of Loyola Law students that revealed evidence of
prosecutorial misconduct, false testimony and ineffective assistance of
counsel.  Mr. Anthony sued the City of Los Angeles and reached a
settlement in April for $8.3 million.  Mr. Anthony has a second federal
civil rights lawsuit pending.  His plans for the settlement money
include opening a center to help others wrongfully convicted adjust to
life after exoneration.

The Decline of Doubt in Islamic Law, EDU 1131

Intisar A. Rabb is a Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and a director of its Islamic Legal Studies Program. She also holds an appointment as a Professor of History at Harvard University and as a Susan S. and Kenneth L. Wallach Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. Her areas of interest include Legislation: Statutory Interpretation and Comparative and Foreign Law: Comparative Constitutional Law. She has conducted research in Egypt, Iran, Syria, and elsewhere. She received a B.A. from Georgetown University, a J.D. from Yale Law School, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Princeton University. She also served as a law clerk for Judge Thomas L. Ambro of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.  Prof. Rabb is the author of Doubt in Islam, which explores a controversial popular notion about Islamic law today, which is that Islamic law is a divine legal tradition that has little room for discretion or doubt, particularly in Islamic criminal law. Despite its contemporary popularity, that notion turns out to have been far outside the mainstream of Islamic law for most of its history.  Click here to RSVP.
