Speaker Series - Michael Laurence, Executive Director of the Habeas Corpus Resource Center, EDU 1111
Michael Laurence is the Executive Director of the Habeas Corpus Resource Center. The Center, located in San Francisco, is a California Judicial Branch agency created in 1999 to provide representation to death-row inmates in state and federal habeas proceedings. It currently employs seventy-three employees, including thirty attorneys.  Please RSVP here by noon on August 18th to guarantee lunch will be ordered for you.

Speaker Series - Carol Sobel, Civil Rights Attorney, EDU 1111
Carol Sobel is a Los Angeles attorney who specializes in civil rights and civil liberties cases.  She is particularly well known for her recent work on behalf of the homeless.  Prior to going into private practice, she spent 20 years working in various positions for the ACLU of Southern California, including as Senior Staff Attorney focusing on the First Amendment for her last seven years there. She has been involved in numerous significant cases in federal and state courts.  She is active in the LA chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, and frequently holds workshops on the rights of demonstrators.  Since 2002, she has been named as one of Los Angeles' Super Lawyers for Civil Rights.  Please RSVP here by August 25th to guarantee lunch will be ordered for you.

CDO:  Federal Honors Program Overview, MPAA 420
Interested in public service? One entree into the U.S. government for newly admitted attorneys is the federal honors program - the government equivalent of Fall EIW for law firms. Join us for a panel presentation featuring: Kim Nguyen, Internal Revenue Services Attorney; Brett Sagel, Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Santa Ana; and Nancy Steffan, Trial Attorney for the Department of Labor.

Faculty members and the Assistant Dean for Career Development will discuss professionalism in class and on campus and how it relates to professionalism in the workplace.  The panel is mandatory for 1Ls.  Lunch will be provided.

Join the CDO and Intellectual Property & Cyberlaw Society (IPCS) as we host a panel of experienced intellectual property and patent law professionals, who will discuss their educational background, training and experience. Time will be reserved for a Q&A session at the conclusion of the panelists' remarks.

This meeting will introduce PILF's mission, goals, and importance to UCI Law's culture. It will also explain how 1Ls can get involved as committee members or 1L chairs. Mandatory for all 1Ls. Lunch will be provided.

CDO:  U.S. Army JAG Corps Information Session, LAW 3750
CPT Bruce L. Mayeaux, J.D. will be visiting UCI Law for an informal information session to speak with students who might be interested in applying to the U.S. Army JAG Corps. The U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps is a military branch that operates like a court system. Its practitioners, referred to as Judge Advocates, are licensed attorneys qualified to represent the Army and Army soldiers in military legal matters.  Students should RSVP on Symplicity. CPT Bruce L. Mayeaux will be conducting formal interviews for 2L summer intern positions and 3L Active Duty positions. Email Kelly Swanholm for additional information.

Transition to Law School Workshop with Professor Leslie, LAW 3500
Professor Christopher Leslie will moderate a workshop about the challenges of transitioning to law school from the work place. The workshop is open to all 1Ls, but is designed to address the special concerns of students returning to school after a gap of several years.  Please RSVP here to ensure lunch is provided for you.
