  • UCI Illuminations Hosts Lecture by Ted Conover, Author of "Immersion," January 25, 2018Ted Conover
    UCI Illuminations, with co-sponsorship by CLSC, welcomes Ted Conover, author of Immersion: A Writer’s Guide to Going Deep, to describe his practice of immersive journalism, where writers learn their subjects by placing themselves in the world of their subjects for a time. Ted Conover teaches journalism at the Arthur L. Carter School of Journalism at New York University. His books include Rolling Nowhere: Riding the Rails with America's Hoboes (1984); Coyotes: A Journey Across Borders with America's Illegal Migrants (1987); Whiteout: Lost in Aspen (1991); Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing (2000); and The Routes of Man: Travels in the Paved World (2010).   • Social Sciences Dean Bill Maurer and CLSC Co-Director Mona Lynch Launch Technology, Law and Society Summer Institute
    What are the legalities of a health insurance company changing a premium based on data streamed from a fitness tracker? When an algorithm in a self-driving car decides which route to take when both are fraught with danger, who can be held liable for damages? And what legal issues come into play when more than half of U.S. stock exchange activity comes from automated trading accounts? As we become increasingly reliant on technology and big data to make decisions that make our businesses and lives more efficient, the legal implications can be a little tricky, says Bill Maurer, UCI social sciences dean and anthropology and law professor. With grant funding from the National Science Foundation, Maurer is teaming with Mona Lynch, criminology, law & society professor and co-director of the Center for Law, Society & Culture, to develop the Technology, Law and Society Summer Institute where they’ll train the next generation of scholars who will tackle these issues.
